Man remains in custody following assault in downtown Nelson

Nelson Police said in a media release Wednesday that a man remains in critical condition following an assault near the front of the Pharmasave store at 685 Baker Street early Tuesday afternoon.

Police received the call for service at approximately 1:02 p.m. Tuesday (June 5) from BC Ambulance to the scene of a male who had been assaulted in the area of 600 Block Baker Street.

“The male victim was known to police and was treated by a member of the public who administered first aid prior to BC Ambulance and Nelson Fire Rescue arriving on scene,” NPD said. “The male continued to receive treatment and was transported to hospital where he remains in critical condition.”

NPD said officers arrested a male suspect shortly thereafter. The suspect remains in police custody and will appear in Provincial Court for charges related to the event.

“The identity of the male victim and the accused has not been released but both males are known to police,” NPD said.

“Police are confident that this event is isolated and there is no increased risk to the public.”

Police are asking that any person who witnessed the event or who may have information of value to contact Nelson Police Department 250-354-3919 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
