After announcing several minor signings during the offseason, the Nelson Leafs made a major move into securing a quality roster for the upcoming Kootenay International Junior Hockey League campaign by luring skillful forward Shawn Campbell away from division rival Castlegar Rebels.

Leafs General Manager Lance Morey made the announcement to the media Thursday, saying the 18-year-old center is coming to Nelson in exchange for a player to be named later.

“This is a huge acquisition for us,” Morey said.

Campbell has been with the Rebels three seasons, registering 70 points including 31 goals.

However, it’s the playmaking ability of the 5’8”, 170-pound center as Campbell played on the Rebels top line the past two seasons.

Leaf coach Mario DiBella said Campbell was the “MVP” of the Sunflower City squad during last year’s Murdoch Final against Nelson, which Castlegar was eliminated in five games by the Green and White.

“He is a highly skilled player with above average speed and was the heart and soul of the Rebels,” DiBella said on the Leafs Facebook page.

Nelson continues to be busy during the offseason as DiBella and Company build a team for the upcoming season.

The Leafs announced dates for training camp this summer.

Main Camp runs August 10-12 at the NDCC Arena.
