The L.V. Rogers Bombers rallied from 12 points down to edge RA McMath of Richmond 26-24 in the final of the 2018 BC High School Boy’s Tier II Rugby Championships Saturday at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford.

LVR claimed its second BC High School Boy’s Tier II Rugby Crown in three years.

“It was if the seniors in their final year just willed the victory,” said Bomber coach Michael Joyce following the victory. “They were so calm and focused in a high-pressure situation and worked and worked, ultimately playing the right way.”

Both teams waltzed into the final after easy semi-final wins. LVR, after a narrow 25-21 win over Sutherland of North Vancouver in the opening game of Pool A play, pounded Brookswood of Abbotsford 48-5 to advance. Meanwhile, McMath got past Glenlyon Norfolk from Victoria 26-24 before romping past D.W. Poppey of Langley 51-17.

In the final, LVR led at halftime but McMath took over the game, holding a 12-point advantage with 20 minutes remaining in the game. That's when the Bomber seniors went to work, leading the squad to score two converted tries to secure the narrow victory and Provincial bragging rights for 2018.

“We huddled under the posts and I told the guys to stick to the process and the game plan,” Joyce explained. “Some key seniors took the team on their backs and willed two converted tries, using calm focused patient attack.”

“It was an amazing display of technical rugby,” Joyce added.

The victory allowed the seniors to redeem themselves after the Bombers were edged 17-13 by Glenlyon Norfolk in the 2017 final. In 2016, the Bombers defeated Robert Bateman Timberwolves of Abbotsford 13-12 after the Fraser Valley power failed the game-winning kick on the final play of the game.

“Our program is getting strong and stronger,” Joyce explained. “We had over 40 girls out to try rugby this year.”

“We have athletes being scouted by university, BC (provincial) teams and club sides,” Joyce added. “This is really an exciting time for rugby in Nelson.”

LVR advanced to the provincial tournament by claiming the Kootenay Zone title with a sweep of Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Wild, Stanley Humphries Rockers of Castlegar and Kimberley’s Selkirk Storm.

The Bombers include, Relmu Wilson-Valdez, Max Moyle, Emerald Lockheart, Jack Lee, Dakota Faulkner, Nathaniel Pan, Henry Leishman, Eli Lusted, Jake Doss, T.J. Winters, Ash van Rensberg, Evan Main, Owen Pfeffer, Cian Wilson-Valdez, Esra Harding, Seamus Howard, Mike Parish and Sebastien Bodine.
