A late goal with time running out by Lennox Lockhurst powered the Nelson Selects to the Gold Medal in the U16 Girls Division at the Kamloops Slurpee Cup.

The goal by Lockhurst came in the final minutes of the contest with Nelson trailing 1-0 to West Vancouver Spuraways.

There was no extra time or penalty kicks allowing Nelson, which finished the round robin with a 3-0 record, to secue the gold medal.

“We are extremely pleased with our team’s defensive play, only giving one goal in four games,” said U16 coach Heath Lockhurst.

“When we lost the ball, the whole team worked hard to win it back. Keeper Ella Peloso wasn’t tested often but was outstanding when we needed her.”

Nelson opened the tournament with a 7-0 trouncing of Okanagan Mission from Kelowna.

The Selects then edged West Vancouver Spuraways 2-0 before posting a 2-0 shutout of Surrey United.

Teigan Barnhart, Alexis Dyck and Semegn Atkinson earned Game MVP honours.

In the final, despite the Selects controlling the play for the majority of the first half, West Van scored just before half time for the 1-0 lead.

Nelson remained positive throughout the game, and kept their composure, before Lockhurst was able to tie the game.

Mallard’s Source for sports would like to salute the girls with Team of the Week honours.

The team includes, Sabien Edney, Nicola Anderson, Maddy Hopkyns, Bri Jones, Teigan Barnhart, Abby Jackson, Farrah Marzicola, Aliza Jones, Aube Jolicoeur, Semegn Atkinson, Lennox Lockhurst, Amelia Savazzi, Ella Peloso, Addis Atkinson, Sydney Benson, Alexis Dyck and coaches Heath Lockhurst and Darren Peloso.
