Sending skiers to the BC Winter Games, taking the Nancy Greene program on the road and hosting the zone finals are just a few of the accomplishments this season by the Whitewater Ski Team said coach Dylan Henderson.

Henderson made the comments after Whitewater Ski Team recently completed its “biggest year yet.”

“There was a lot of snow falling, which sometimes made training a challenge,” Henderson said. “But the kids really enjoyed skiing the powder and the steeps alongside race training. It’s just classic WH2O.”

With 150 athletes and 17 coaches this year — 110 of those racers being in the under 10 years old Nancy Greene program, the team can claim the largest roster in its history.

It’s also safe to say that growth isn’t going to be stopping anytime soon.

“We sent six of our kids to the BC Games in Kamloops this season, and we also sent one racer, Henry Leischman, to the U16 Nationals in Ontario,” Henderson said.

“It’s a significant first for us that we’re incredibly proud of.”

In addition to these milestones, Whitewater Ski Team traveled far and wide for the regular Nancy Greene and Provincial race series’, taking young skiers to compete both in towns as close as Salmo, Rossland, and Grand Forks, and further afield to Kimberley, Whistler and Banff.

The zone finals at Whitewater were also a great success, bringing 200 young athletes to Nelson for a day of competition, fun and sportsmanship.

“We had a ski cross track, mini downhill course, speed trap, a long jump, and a parents vs kids dual slalom in addition to the regular events,” says Coach Henderson. “It felt like a festival on skis!”

The Whitewater Ski Team wishes to thank Whitewater Resort for being such a gracious host, the parents and coaches for their dedication and the skiers for training and competing hard throughout the season.
