Nelson Bantam Leafs open Provincials with two impressive wins

The Nelson Leafs got off to a great start at the BC Hockey Bantam Tier 3 Championships Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

The Leafs defeated Penticton 5-4 in a thriller to open the tournament, then dispatched Terrace 7-1 in the feature game following the opening ceremonies.

The tourney includes Mission Bantam A1 Stars, Penticton Bantam Tier 3 Vees, Powell River Bantam Rep Kings, Dawson Creek Canucks, Sunshine Coast Blues, Cranbrook Hornets, Greater Trail GTMHA Smokies and Terrace Kermodes.

Leading 5-3 in the third against Penticton, the Leafs watched as the South Okanagan Rep cut the margin to 5-4 with a few minutes remaining in the game.

Penticton pressed for the equalizer with the extra attacker, but the Leafs were able to hold off to secure the win.

Against Terrace, Nelson started slow as the Central Interior squad opened a 1-0 lead.

Nelson tied the game before the first period ended before ringing up six straight to coast to the win.

The Leafs return to action Monday at 4 p.m against Dawson Creek before concluding the nine-team tournament Tuesday against Sunshine Coast.

The top four teams, two in each division, advance to the playoff round Wednesday.

The Gold Medal final is set for 8 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the semi-final losers battle it out for the Bronze Medal.
