Nelson's own Ian Walgren is off to the Special Olympic Winter Games next year in Vernon.

Walgren, who completed a grueling eight-race schedule to represent the Kootenay Zone in Special Olympic Speed Skating sport this past weekend at the Richmond Oval, has an eye on qualifying for a spot on Team BC at the Nationals in 2020.

Walgren had to take the hard way through the qualifier competing in preliminary heats in all four of his races to advance to the finals.

In the 777 meter race Walgren won his preliminary heat advancing him to the 777 m final where he placed third with a time of 2:03.00 well off his personnel best time.

In his 333 meter race Ian finished second after a tough fall on the last lap but was able to advance to the 333 m final where he just out worked his opponents to finish first in a time of 49.8 seconds.

In his 222 meter race Walgren finished third in the preliminary heat and came second in the final with a time of 31.47 seconds.

In the 500 meter preliminary heat, Ian fell hard after catching an edge in the soft ice, but was able to recover and place third to advance to the final.

In the final Walgren experienced his best race, finishing half a lap ahead of his closest competitor with a time of 1:18.00 to claim the gold medal.
