No one was hurt after a man known to police grabbed a knife and threatened officers along with himself during an incident last week at Waits News a Nelson Police Department media release said Thursday.

The incident began at approximately 1:15 p.m. (Thursday) January 18, 2018 when Nelson Police Department officers responded to a report of a male causing a disturbance at a local health service provider.

Staff asked the man to leave the location before police were called due to his aggressive and unsafe behavior.

Police said the male was subsequently located by police and was advised to not return to the same location.

“The male continued to yell at members of the public and police displaying behavior that made him a concern for the public and his own safety,” the NPD media release said.

“The male refused police instructions and attempted to return to the same service provider.”

Police attempted to arrest the male under several legislative authorities including the Mental Health Act and Criminal Code.

However, the man fled, then entered Waits News where he forced his way past staff and grabbed a large knife from the serving area.

“The male pointed the knife at police and made threats to kill the police before turning the knife on himself, pressing it hard against his neck,” the release said.

“The male continued to make demands for police to shoot him while police engaged in de-escalating dialogue as police had their firearms and Tasers drawn.”

Police said after continued dialogue between members and the male he surrendered the knife and eventually allowed police to take him into custody.

“Remarkably, no injuries were sustained by the male, members of the public or responding members,” NPD said.

“The male has been charged with a number of Criminal offences and is awaiting appearance in court.”

Police said the man had been the subject of numerous calls for service in the preceding weeks.
