It seemed as if half the Nelson decided to book sick on call Friday, as the lift lines at Whitewater Ski Resort were packed and the stoke was high for the first day of operations for the 2016-17 season on snow.

“It was a great opening,” said Kirk Jensen, General Manager at Whitewater.

“We had good crowds for a Friday; it was a weekend type crowd on a Friday so that’s good. I’m guessing there was a lot of people not at work this morning.”

Even though opening day fell on a workday this year, numbers of skiers were higher than a typical opening and despite some mechanical troubles that caused the Silverking lift to shut down early in the day, Jensen told The Nelson Daily that everything should be good to go for Saturday.

“We had a bit of technical difficulties with the Silverking lift, which had some electrical issues, but it looks like we should have things rolling again normal tomorrow,” he said.

While it doesn’t exactly look like winter has fully hit the downtown core of Nelson, up at Whitewater Ski Resort is entirely different as there was plenty of fresh snow on the hill.

“…Excellent conditions up high in the mountains, still early season conditions on the lower part of the mountain and we’re set to go right through to April 2nd, “ Jensen said.

“We’re off to a great start.”

Whitewater opened the season with a base of 140 cms and 149 cms at the summit. The resort currently has three of the four lifts operating and had received eight cms in the past 24 hours and 43 during the recent week.
