A Nelson woman continues to reap the benefits of strong community support in her fight against cancer.

That support will take on a new look as Nelsonites join forces Saturday night at the Bloom Nightclub for Galena’s Breast Cancer Fundraising Shaker.

Galena Rose Pal, a longtime resident of the Nelson area and mother to three-year-old Snow, received the devastating news in June she has cancer, and the disease had shown signs of spreading.

Since Pal received the news, the community has rallied around the Nelson mother to help raise funds for her expensive treatment.

“The community has really come together for her,” said friend Steve Archdekin, who is spearheading a fundraising campaign so Pal can receive treatment at a cancer-focused clinic in Tijuana, Mexico.

“Through various efforts we have raised $40,000 in about a month,” Archdekin added.

“The support for Galena has really been incredible. One person commented that if he is ever asked why he lives in this area you have to look no further than what is happening for this amazing woman.

“Whether you know her or not all this has shown everything great about this place we all get to call home.”

Pal, who recently returned from the Mexican Natural Healing clinic, has been working with a host of some amazing doctors, both conventional and natural.

Archdekin said that although Pal was sick the first day after the first round of chemo, she has started to feel better.

“She has actually felt the best she has in years . . . living a normal life outside of constant appointments, tests and treatments,” Archdekin said, adding Pal recently received some amazing news that the cancer has not spread to neck and brain.

“She has even hiked to the top of the Chief in Squamish.”

Despite the positive news, Archdekin said Pal has only completed the early stages of treatment.

Hence the need for the fundraising campaign to continue — Saturday night at the Bloom Nightclub.

Archdekin said Jimmy Bundshuh and Jenna Arpita have very kindly donated the club for the fundraiser.

Lint and DJ Hoola will provide the entertainment. There’s a silent auction, 50-50 draw, merchandise for sale, and a whole lot of fun. Admission is a minimum donation of $20 at the door, which opens at 9 p.m. followed by music at 9:30 p.m.

Archdekin said there is also a hair shaving station in support of Pal.

Businesses wanting to sponsor the shaving station can contact Archdekin at: [email protected]

“There are many, many more treatments and procedures ahead of Galena,” Archdekinsaid.

“With those treatment comes a lot more expenses too, so as long as she is going through this we will continue the fundraising efforts to help her.”

Archdekin said all of this support has helped during the healing process has not gone unnoticed.

“Thank you for all your prayers,” Archdekin said, relaying Pal’s wishes.

“I could barely move my neck in Mexico. I was certain it had moved to my neck and concerned it was moving to my brain. Although I kept telling myself I am clear I am clear. What a relief! Thank u all for the prayers.”
