Crow blamed for causing Tuesday's power outage to 7,000 Nelson Hydro customers
Nelson Hydro said the cause of Tuesday’s power outage that took down most city customers was due to the work of a large crow.
“The cause was found to be a large crow that had gotten onto the power lines in one of our substations causing a hard system fault including damaging a porcelain insulator,” a media release from Nelson Hydro said.
“Large birds can initiate a fault by spreading their wings from one energized wire to another energized wire.”
The approximately 7,000 Hydro customers affected included all of the City of Nelson, Taghum, Grohman, about half of the Blewett area and the North Shore from Nelson to the Redfish area.
Power was restored to service by section and was restored to all customers by 7:30 p.m.
