Nelson Hydro workers were out early in the downtown core to re-install the traffic light pole outside Wait’s News at the intersection of Baker and Ward Streets.

A delivery truck had damaged the pole last Friday (July 8).

This means it’s back to normal for traffic and pedestrians at one of Nelson’s busiest intersections as the Heritage City summer tourist season heats up.

Director of Public Works and Utilities Colin Innes said the public needs to wait just a few more sleeps before traffic lights are restored to one of the busiest intersections in Nelson at Ward and Baker.

Last week one of the poles supporting the traffic lights outside Waits News was damaged by a delivery truck forcing Nelson Hydro workers to remove the light standard and turning Ward and Baker into a four-way stop intersection.

“Garage staff is currently fixing the pole and the traffic lights should be reinstalled by Nelson Hydro crews and by up and running by sometime next week,” Innes told The Nelson Daily Thursday.

The current situation has tested the patience of both drivers and pedestrians as people look to get around through the downtown core of Nelson.

While Ward and Baker sees its traffic lights back, Inness said Baker and Josephine will remain a four-way stop intersection for now.

This is due to redesign of the downtown core currently happening as the public joins together to at crafting a vision and a plan for the downtown core’s next generation — including strategies for everything from signage, sidewalk patios, lighting and traffic signals.

“We like to thank the public for their patience as we work to replace the traffic lights at Ward and Baker,” Inness said.
