What better day than Earth Day to plant a garden.

Representatives from Nelson co-operatives  — Upper Columbia Co-operative Council, Kootenay Co-op Radio, Kootenay Insurance Services, Kootenay Country Store Co-operative, Nelson & District Credit Union — joined Nelson Food Cupboard volunteers to plant crops Friday during Earth Day at the Food Cupboard’s garden at Hoover and Ward Street.

The exercise was part of Random Act of Co-operation, a program by Nelson Co-ops to have staff, volunteers and directors assist in building the community.

The Nelson Food Cupboard garden is just one project that needs a little love as volunteers arrived shovel and rake in hand to turn and plant during the lunch hour to ensure a successful garden season for the Food Cupboard’s shelves.

The Food Cupboard is seeing a dramatic increase in clients, and by ensuring a productive growing season the shelves can be complemented with locally grown produce.

Even a little rain did not deter these gardeners from getting a little dirty on Earth Day.
