Some confusion over location of Chahko Mika Mall transit stop
It appears the ongoing dilemma over where best to locate the Chahko Mika Mall transit stop may soon be coming to an end.
A City of Nelson spokesperson told a local radio station that, although a few details need to be handled, he could confirm the relocation is going back closer to its original spot at the east end of the mall near Save-on-Foods.
But a BC Transit spokesperson said, “discussions between the landowner, the City of Nelson and BC Transit are ongoing,” and “no decisions have been made at this point.”
BC Transit, citing “safety” as the reason, moved the mall stop from near the entrance to Save-On-Foods to outside WalMart Garden Centre last fall when upgrades to the east end of the mall parking slowed the traffic flow.
“Due to safety concerns identified by BC Transit and the City of Nelson, the previous bus stop location, just outside Save-On Foods, could not continue in its current format,” Mike Russell, Media and Public Relations Advisor for BC Transit, explained in a media release.
The mall stop has been located on the west side of WalMart since the construction.
However, the stop has been less than desirable for passengers as Jill Wilson explained in a letter to The Nelson Daily, adding “its definitely a dangerous and unsafe place for a permanent stop.”
Despite the confusion, it appears the new stop is coming soon, just for now nothing is etched in stone.
“We are looking at potential locations for the Mall stop,” added the BC Transit spokesperson.
