Whitewater Ski Resort celebrated its 40th anniversary this weekend, and conditions couldn’t have been better.

Before the season began, residents of the Kootenays and snow sports enthusiasts were bombarded with doom and gloom predictions of how the El Nino system was going to make for a warm, dry winter with little to no snowfall.

Clearly, those predictions could not have been further from the truth. Many locals have been skiing and riding since early November, and the snow gods blessed us yet again with unreal conditions for the big celebrations this weekend.

Aside from the amazing snow, Whitewater hosted their 7th Annual Whitewater Winter Carnival, which featured a snow sculpture competition, marshmallow roasting and a live performance by LiNT and Whitewater’s own Jimmy Lewis. Once the sun set, the fun continued with a torchlight parade and fireworks on the Silver King side.

The celebrations continued Sunday with the Gericks Summit Cup and a Companion Rescue Demo with Whitewater Ski Patrol featuring Exie, everybody’s favourite CARDA dog.

Of course, during all the events, music and competition, the most important facet of Whitewater’s fame was present in abundance; endless amounts of deep, fresh snow.
