Emma Chart and Quinn Barron star in 27th annual Summer Youth Theatre production of Disney’s Mary Poppins beginning Thursday at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson.

Chart and Barron are part of the 33-member cast directed by Geoff Burns.

A former drama teacher at LV Rogers and principal at Trafalgar Middle School, Burns says it’s a treat working with kids who are passionate about theatre because they bring a real energy to the work.

Mary Poppins is a 1964 American musical fantasy film directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney, with songs written and composed by the Sherman Brothers.

The play stars Chart in the titular role of a magical nanny who visits a dysfunctional family in London and employs her unique brand of lifestyle to improve the family’s dynamic.

Allison Girvan directs music while Lynette Lightfoot choreographs the breathtaking dance numbers.

Talent is oozing out of the youthful cast members as they stomp, sing, and clap their way to opening night.

The peppy musical runs from the Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with an additional matinee Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Summer Youth Theatre has been a staple in Nelson for almost two decades. Students between the ages of 12 to 18 years, first audition, then practice their parts for more than three weeks before taking the stage to perform.
