Police are investigating after a suspicious package of unknown origin was located early Wednesday morning.

Wednesday (February 4) at 7:09 a.m., the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious package at the BC Dragoons Armoury located at 720 Lawrence Avenue.

The package, which could not be closely examined, appeared to be a combination of electronic devices and cables wrapped in unusual packaging. A section of Lawrence Avenue, directly in front of the Armoury was secured for public safety reasons and the BC RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) was consulted.

No homes were evacuated and only traffic on a small portion of Lawrence Avenue was affected.

While EDU was in transit to Kelowna, the individual believed responsible approached police and confirmed the contents of the package to be harmless.

The 34-year-old Kelowna man was apprehended and transported to the hospital for any medical treatment he might require.

Under such circumstances, public safety is paramount and the police must respond with the highest risk assessment until the package is mitigated or proven to be benign.

The investigation is ongoing.
