Selkirk College student earns Fred Sherratt honour
Selkirk College student Nikita Afonso took home one of the major honours at the Fred Sherratt Award Ceremony this past week in Toronto.
Afonso, from Penticton and attends the music school at Selkirk College in Nelson, had one of the top GPA’s in her class and was one of the top band leaders and performers in recent years.
Truly passionate about music and performing, Afonso has recorded two CDs of original material, one called “Sweetest Things” and her newest is self titled “Nikita Afonso”.
Afonso is truly grateful for the opportunities she has had in the past such as getting pulled on stage to sing with one of her favourite country music stars, Keith Urban and getting to open for Canadian Country act Paul Brandt.
Afonso is also honoured to have received the Penticton Chamber of Commerce “Young Citizen of the Year” along with SOWINS “Young Leader of the Year” back in 2011.
The Fred Sherratt Award is named in honour of broadcasting pioneer, Fred Sherratt and recognizes the outstanding achievement, talent and leadership of post-secondary students in music programs nation-wide.
The goal of the award is to assist recipients in their transition from school to career through a monetary award of $2,500 and a trip to Toronto to attend a reception and an educational day at MUCH and at CHUM Radio studios.
