New Denver, Kaslo toss out red carpet for annual May Days Celebrations

The Victoria Day long weekend is on the horizon.

Unfortunately, like every year the weather is about to change for the . . ..?

Well, hopefully the weather gurus are wong.

Despite the threat of inclement weather for the unofficial first long weekend of summer, New Denver and Kalso continue to give locals the best reason for a  Staycation with the traditional May Day celebrations.

Both celebrations have been around for more than 100 years — Kaslo 121 and New Denver 107 years young.

In New Denver, sadness continues to hang over the village following the canoeing accident that has claimed four young people last Saturday.

However, with heavy hearts, organizers said celebrations will continue during the annual festive weekend.

“In light of the recent tragedy in New Denver, the show must go on,” a May Days committee organizer told The Nelson Daily.

“Our job will be make May Days 2014 a positive and uplifting experience for all.”

In respect of the friends and family of the victims, May Days committee  will be honoring the four young spirits of New Denver with a lantern ceremony to be held 9 p.m. (or dusk) Sunday in Centennial Park.

RHC Insurance has donated 700 floating lanterns for air and water and will be sold by donation throughout the day with all proceeds going towards a trust account set up for the families.

The New Denver kick off the celebrations Thursday with the Queen’s Pageant.

Some of the events in New Denver include a fishing derby, soap box race, golf tournament, bike rodeo, kids soccer games, beach volleyball tournament and the traditional pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

The parade goes Monday at 10 a.m.

A few kilometers to the north is the Kaslo May Days.

The public is welcome to attend the always entertaining Logger Sports in Kaslo — Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There’s also the show ‘n’ shine antique car show, Roller Derby Saturday hosted by the Valley Vendettas at the Arena from 6-8 p.m., Skate Park Jam Sunday, a Horse Demonstration, the slo-pitch ball tournament and the May Day Parade on Victoria Day Monday.
