The Christmas holiday season spells out happiness, prosperity and good times for most people in Nelson.

However, there are some people in the community struggling just to provide the basic necessities during the festive season.

Which is why the Salvation Army is asking the public to dig a little deeper this holiday season during the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign.

“This is a very important time for the Salvation Army,” said Major Robin Borrows of the Nelson Salvation Army.

“Most people can go out and buy a Christmas turkey. But for some in and around this community, many have a difficult time.”

Burrows said the number of new families arriving at the door of the Nelson Salvation Army is disturbingly, growing.

“We’re working very hard with families to help with budgeting, helping them find jobs . . . and we’ve had some successes,” Burrows explains.

“But there seems to be an ever increasing number of new people who need help.”

The Salvation Army Kettle Campaign kicked off this week and runs until Christmas.

Kettles are found in 2000 locations across Canada and are an opportunity for the public to donate whatever funds they can to support the work of The Salvation Army during the Christmas season and throughout the year.

In Nelson Kettle volunteers will be ringing the bell at bells at locations in the Chahko Mika Mall or on Baker Street in front of the CIBC bank.

Burrows said people could donate with the Canada Post envelope mail out sent to homes recently sent in and around Nelson.

The public can also go online at filthekettle.com to help, by simply following the steps starting with choosing which kettle location support before making a secure donation using credit card or PayPal account.

The Salvation Army is asking for the public to donate a new, unwrapped toy or food item at the Angel Tree located next to the Chahko Mika Mall Kettle.

Burrows said the Salvation Army is getting a special event to help promote giving season with the arrival of the CP Rail Holiday Train (Wednesday) December 11 at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Lakeside Park.

“What we raise here during the Christmas Kettle Campaign will pay for a family to have Christmas dinner as well as little bit extra to carry them over through that Christmas week as well as toys for the children,” said Burrows, adding that every nickel raised in the Nelson area remains helping families in the Nelson area.

Which is just another reason for Nelson area people to dig a little deeper knowing the funds are helping fellow Nelsonites.
