Xander Schmidt crowned Soap Box Champ for 2013

Xander Schmidt and Michael Chesney came away the big winners at the fifth annual Nelson Chrysler Soap Box Derby Friday on Lake Street in Nelson.
The Soap Box Derby kicks off the Road Kings Queen City Show & Shine weekend.
Schmidt, also the overall winner of the day, won the under-18 division by more than two seconds over Samuel Evans. Schmidt finished in a time of 16.1 seconds.
Third was Joshua Evans at 18.9 seconds.
Chesney took bragging rights in the over-18 division, narrowly winning in a time of 16.3 seconds over Aaron Schmidt.
Christine Schmidt was third at 18.2 seconds.
Competitors were pleased with the new location on Lake Street from Kootenay Street in the past.
“Feedback from racers, spectators and parents alike regarding the location was way safer, better location, less traffic and better stopping area,” said a derby spokesperson.
