About 10,000 residents in the Kamloops area were without power Monday after a lightning strike hit in a transmission tower early morning.

North Thompson communities of Sun Peaks, Rayleigh, Clearwater and Barriere were without power after lightning hit a transmission tower, breaking one of the tower arms.

The outage affected about 300 kilometres from just outside Kamloops, north to Valemount.

BC Hydro said lights were not expected back on until noon at the earliest.
