The Osoyoos RCMP and South Okanagan Traffic Services are investigating a fatal collision involving a cyclist which occurred Monday evening on Highway 97, north of Osoyoos.

At around 9:55 p.m. the Osoyoos RCMP responded to a collision involving a cyclist.

Scene examination by South Okanagan Traffic Services investigators and the collision reconstructionist findings indicate that the 52-year old Osoyoos man was laying on the road at the time when he was struck by a Mazda 626 sedan.

At the scene, investigators spoke to the driver and occupants of a Mazda sedan that had been traveling northbound on Highway 97 when the collision occurred.

This vehicle stopped after hitting the cyclist and the occupants were cooperative with investigators.

The collision took place in a rural agricultural area with no lighting. The male was deceased at the scene and was wearing dark clothing while riding in an unlit rural agricultural area.

He was not equipped with bicycling safety gear at the time. Investigators have confirmed the identity of the deceased man as Michael Geoffrey Holmees of the Osoyoos area.

Investigators need to identify and speak to the driver and occupants of a light coloured SUV with black roof racks that was seen traveling northbound shortly after an impact was heard. Investigators need to speak to this driver in order to determine what if any involvement they may have had prior to the Mazda sedan striking the man.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the South Okanagan Traffic Services at 250-499-2250 or the Osoyoos RCMP at 250-495-7236.
