Canada Day 2013 promises to be a celebration for the ages
One year after dealing with floods, rainy weather and a cancellation of the ever-popular fireworks, the Nelson Chamber of Commerce is excited at the weather report that calls for sunny, warm weather for Canada Day 2013.
Environment Canada is calling for 37 C temperatures for Canadians to celebrate Canada’s birthday.
“It’s a great family fun day, that the Chamber is pleased to organize,” Tom Thomson, Executive Director of Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.
The Chamber of Commerce has graciously played host to the annual community celebration at Lakeside Rotary Park for many years.
The family oriented celebration of our greater community, with thousands of people attending from all over the region, begins at 10:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies.
Nelson Mayor John Dooley and Nelson/Creston MLA Michelle Mungall join chamber president Justin Pelant at the podium.
Heritage Harmony Singers lead the audience with O’Canada before the festivities begin for the day, culminating at 10 p.m. (dusk) with the Fireworks Display by the Nelson Firefighters from the waterfront near the Lakeside Soccer Fields.
There are many acts scheduled for the Canada Day stage, including the Brenda McJones Highland Dancers, John McCuaig, who played at the 2013 Junos party, and Dallas Wolbaum and Aaron Nelson and Buzz.
The Rotary Barbecue goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Thomson said one of the highlights each year is the serving of our Canada Day birthday cake, which happens following the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m.
Before the park events begin, the public is welcome to attend the Lion’s Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Baker Street.
