Nelson Baseball enjoys a rebound season
Maybe it was the new diamond.
Maybe Mother Nature being so kind as to give us glorious weather.
Whatever the reason, Nelson Baseball Association is experiencing a bit of an epiphany in 2013 as ball players are coming out of the woodwork for a chance to take to the diamond.
“I think registration is up this season because it been a fun experience for the kids and parents for the last couple of seasons,” NBA president Larry Martel said recently.
Martel said registration increased 25 percent from 2012.
A large part is the work put in by NBA volunteers to resurrect Lions Park Ball diamond.
“The new diamond will be an added bonus this season and we may see even more ball players next season because of it,” Martel explained.
“The weather was terrible last June and washed out a lot of games but it’s been the opposite so far this season,” he added.
The NBA has four T-Ball and Rookie teams (under-eight) to go with four Little League Minors (9-10 year olds), one Little League Intermediate (11-13 years) and one Senior Little League team (14-16 years) this season.
The season, starting April 15, has about six weeks remaining before playoffs and All Star Team Selection.
Martel said Nelson is hosting the West Kootenay Minor Playoffs on June 21-23 at Lions and Queen Elizabeth parks.
