A female driver is facing possible driving charges as result of an incident where it is alleged that the woman backed her vehicle over a tent at a Tumbler Ridge recreational area over the long weekend.

The incident left two of three of the tent occupants injured.

Tumbler Ridge RCMP is investigating a motor vehicle incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Monday (May 20).

A group of approximately 12 persons were camping in an off-road area near the Wolverine River outside of Tumbler Ridge.

The group included a young family whose 20-year-old mother, a three-year-old boy and 18-month-old boy who were asleep in a tent.

Another 20 year old female and her boyfriend were apparently engaged in an argument and in an attempt to leave the area, the female is alleged to have backed a pick-up truck over the tent and its sleeping occupants.

The young mother and her children were extricated by quick thinking witnesses to the accident and rushed to the Tumbler Ridge Community Health Centre by other campers.

The injured female sustained various serious bodily injuries and remains in stable condition in Dawson Creek Hospital recovering. The three-year-old boy sustained a laceration to the back of his head which required sutures and the 18 month old boy was uninjured.

The 20-year-old female driver was arrested by Tumbler Ridge RCMP shortly after and has been cooperative and assumed responsibility for her actions.

A tentative court date is set for July 18 in Tumbler Ridge, charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm will be recommended to Crown Counsel.

Police have become aware that the female suspect in this incident has been receiving threats of violence and death over social media and wish to remind the public that a police investigation is still underway.

Such actions are more harmful than helpful to an investigation and any threats of actual or perceived violence toward a person, animal, or damage to property will be investigated and could result in charges being pursued against the perpetrator of those threats.
