An 82-year-old woman is dead after being involved in a head-on collision on Highway 1 near Abbotsford Saturday (December 15).

The woman from Hope stopped at the Bradner Road rest stop at approximately 10:45 a.m. When she returned to the highway woman turned the 2005 4-door Buick Allure the wrong direction, heading eastbound, and was struck by a westbound 2003 Mazda Hatchback head-on.

The driver of the Mazada, a 29-year-old male along with his 24-year-old wife and three-month-old baby boy from Chilliwack, sustained non life-threatening injuries. The baby boy fortunately was unharmed.

“This tragic loss of life has impacted a family forever,” said Sgt Peter Thiessen of the Lower Mainland District RCMP.

“This is a time of year when families come together and celebrate the holidays but unfortunately a family now grieves the loss of a beloved family member. Fortunately there was not a greater loss of life.”

The Upper Fraser Valley Traffic Services continues to investigate. The name of the deceased woman cannot be released pending notification of next of kin.
