UPDATE: Nelson Canada Day Fireworks moved to B.C. Day weekend
Nelsonites will have to wait at least a month before putting the final touch on Canada Day celebrations.
The Nelson Chamber of Commerce, sponsors of the annual fireworks, have decided to postpone the event until the B.C. Day Weekend due to flooding on the waterfront.
The decision was made Monday to move the event to the August longweekend after organizers decided the waterfront was still too wet to hold the thousands spectators and fireworks launch crew.
Chamber staff have yet to determined which night of the longweekend to hold the fireworks.
However, officials expect to make that decision soon.
The B.C. Day weekend runs from August 4-6, with the stat holiday scheduled for Monday, August 6.

URGENT: NELSON CANADA DAY FIREWORKS CANCELLED
Flooding waters from Kootenay Lake onto the Lakeside Park soccer fields forced cancellation of traditionaly Nelson’s Canada Day 2012 Fireworks set for Sunday at dusk.
“Around 4 p.m. (Sunday) the chief in talks with the fireworks crew cancelled fireworks,” a Nelson Fire Department member told The Nelson Daily.
“There’s just too much water on the soccer fields for our launch team to set off fireworks.”
The annual fireworks generally conclude Canada Day celebration on the waterfront.
However, this year a wet June and deep snow pack in the mountains saw Kootenay Lake water rise to levels not seen in decades.
The result has water flowing onto the fields at low spots on the waterfront pathway.
The launch team, in conjunction with the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, will reassess the waterfront Monday to determine if the fireworks show can be held at dusk on July 2.
If the field to not dry out, then fireworks show could be re-scheduled for B.C. Day in August.
