RDCK urges some residents to remain on high alert; Kaslo's water quality advisory to continue for the foreseeable future
The worst appears to be over but the Regional District of Central Kootenay continues to be concerned as high water continues to threaten areas in the region Friday.
While an evacuation alert for Peterman Road in West Creston has been lifted, the RDCK cautions residents in the Picard road in Winlaw and Slocan Valley West Road in Passmore to remain alert and vigilant in and around creeks and streams and their banks during the freshet season.
The RDCK said is telling residents if water courses begin to run dirty, excessive debris, sediment flow, or breaches, piping or overtopping of creeks, streams or rivers are observed, they should call 1-800-663-3456.
Meanwhile in West Creston no homes are threatened.
However, Peterman Road remains closed and the alternate route off Smith Road is being utilized.
Traffic control remains in place on the Smith Road detour for now.
Meanwhile, near Salmo work crews appear to be getting the upper hand at the dam on the former HB Mine property after rains earlier in the week affected the stability at the tailings pond.
Village of Kaslo relaxes water flow advisory
Kaslo residents are now able to keep their flowers and gardens watered after Village officials relaxed the water flow advisory from a Level 4 to Level 2 effective Friday (July 6).
Simplified, this means watering of lawns, flowerbeds and gardens is permitted on certain days at certain hours is now allowed.
However, staff is quick to point out this decision made be reversed if higher temperatures continue.
“This change may or may not prove to be successful, in which case we will have to adjust our conservation levels quickly,” Village of Kaslo said in a written press release.
The water system in Kaslo was compromised in June when a slide took out the dam at the main intake.
Village staff has worked feverously to repair the system.
Residents are asked to report any abuse of Level 2 regulations to the Village office at 250-353-2311.
