Nelson Youth Soccer received the green light to play its Kootenay Provincial B Cup Playdowns this weekend after city officials closed its Lakeside Fields earlier this week.

A Nelson Youth Soccer spokesperson told The Nelson Daily the local association asked the city to use the Lakeside Pitch to host the playdowns.

Earlier in the week City of Nelson closed the waterfront fields after rains made the pitches unplayable.

Nelson Youth Soccer is hosting the U18 Boys division along with the U16 Boys and U13 and U15 Girls.

The Nelson U18 Boys was the first team to advance to the Provincial B Cup July 5-8 in Aldergrove after posting a 4-1 victory over Columbia Valley.

Earlier in the week the Selects bounced Kootenay South.

Many of the players quickly exchanged shorts and spikes for polished shoes and tuxedos as they were all part of the 2012 L.V. Rogers Grad Class ceremonies at the Nelson and District Community Complex.

Today the Grand March took over the NDCC Arena. This afternoon the calvacade was scheduled for downtown Nelson.

Mother Nature puts a halt to outdoor activities, forces City of Nelson to close Lakeside fields

Not only is Mother Nature raising havoc with rivers and creeks in and around Nelson, but the abundance of wet weather has created a lake on the road and parking lot for users of Lakeside Pitch.

The influx of water forced City of Nelson to close fields and Nelson Youth Soccer to shutdown operations for the weekend.

Environment Canada forecast has more rain for Saturday with between five to 10 milimeters of rain expected.

There’s a 60 percent chance of showers Saturday evening before the sun returns for Sunday and Monday.

However, don’t put away those water boots just yet.

Rain is back in the forecast for the rest of the week.
