New duty-free rules coming into effect June 1
Canadians can bring home more from abroad without paying duties to the federal government thanks to new duty-free rules coming into effect on Friday, June 1.
The biggest change to cross-border shopping is the increased allowances to duty-free purchases.
Canadian travellers outside the country for more than 24 hours can now bring in up to $200 in goods.
However, travellers should be aware that if they go over the $200 duty will be charged on the full amount.
The previous limit was capped at $50.
However, rules regarding alcohol purchases outside of Canada still hold true, despite the increased in allowance.
After 48 hours the monetary value increases to $800 CDN worth of goods per person along with purchases of tabacco and alcohol products.
Tabacco products include:
- 200 cigarettes;
- 50 cigars or cigarillos;
- 200 tobacco sticks; and
- 200 grams of manufactured tobacco
Alcohol products include:
- 1.5 litres of wine; or
- 1.14 litres (40 oz.) of liquor; or
- 24 × 355 ml cans/bottles (8.5 litres) of beer or ale
