Rain can’t stop the fight against Cancer.

Which is why more than 150 supporters of the fight against the deadly disease turned up for the annual 2012 Cancer Relay for Life, Nelson edition, Saturday at Lakeside Park.

“We had 18 teams making an impact . . . that’s huge,” a still tired organizer Brenda MacDonald told The Nelson Daily Sunday.

The day began with opening ceremonies before the Kootenay Kilties Pipe Band led the Survivor’s Parade around Lakeside Park.

Erin Sheriff and Lazy Poker Blues Band provided entertainment along with several other events to keep the participants busy.

During her address to participants, MacDonald fought back tears thinking of all the people cancer has affected.

“I’m not a survivor,” MacDonald said.

“I’m lucky because I have not I have been impacted as the survivors have been but I have been a caregiver of sorts to way to many so I have seen what cancer can do.

“So I just want to help out in any way I can.”

The 2012 Nelson Cancer Relay for Life raised a whopping $27,000 to help in the fight against the disease. The total was up significantly from the 2011 relay.

The Relay for Life also helps the Canadian Cancer Society Influence change through our advocacy efforts to create healthier environments and help individuals reduce their risk of cancer; empower Canadians with reliable, up-to-date information; speak up on issues that affect Canadians with cancer and provide a range of support programs to people living with cancer, including family members and caregiver.
