Speed takes life of Surrey man near Spuzzum

Lower Mainland RCMP said an investigation continues into the fatal crash on Highway 1 near the Alexandra tunnel and Spuzzum.

On Friday, January 13, at approximately 8 p.m. Upper Fraser Valley Traffic Services, Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP and B.C. Ambulance Services personnel responded to a motor vehicle crash near Spuzzum.

A vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 1 when it failed to negotiate a right hand curve. The vehicle entered the ditch, flipping end over end several times coming to rest on its roof in the centre of the roadway.

The 53-year old male driver and lone occupant from Surrey was pronounced dead at Fraser Canyon Hospital after extensive efforts to revive him.  

The driver suffered heavy internal injuries in the crash. Speed is believed to be a major factor with respect to this crash. Alcohol and drugs appear not to be a factor.


“It is important for the public to understand the impact of speeding,” said Sgt Peter Thiessen, Senior spokesperson for the Lower Mainland District RCMP and EDIV.

“The 53 year old driver is not coming home to his family as a result of speed.”

The investigation continues however the identity of the 53-year old male drive will not be released at this time.
