Pilot of RCMP helicopter killed in crash near Cultus Lake
Chief Superintendent Wayne Rideout confirmed Tuesday that the pilot of a RCMP helicopter died during a crash in the Cultus Lake area of Chilliwack.
“It is with incredible sadness that I must now report that our pilot has passed away,” Rideout told a press conference Tuesday.
“At this point, there are many unanswered questions and the Transportation Safety Board and the British Columbia Coroners Service will conduct this investigation.”
Rideout pieced together what the RCMP does know about the crash.
The helicopter had just successfully completed a training exercise and was preparing to return to base when the helicopter was seen crashing.
The pilot, a Civilian Member of the RCMP, was the sole occupant.
He was immediately taken to hospital by RCMP Emergency Response Team members who were present as part of the training exercise.
The pilot’s name will not be disclosed at this time as, although his direct family has been notified, we do not want his extended family and other loved ones to hear this information through media.
“This man was a part of our RCMP family and he will be missed,” Rideout said.
“I want to express my most sincere condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time,” he added.
