The Nelson Neptune Fantastic 14 won a total of seven medals during the recent stop on the Kootenay Summer Swim Association in Creston.

Led by Eliminator winner Sam Matthew, the Neptunes won a gold, four silver and two bronze to make head coach Michelle Lorusso one happy skipper.

“I was very happy with our solid 14 swimmers at this meet,” Lorusso said following Sunday’s conclusion.

“The kids keep knocking off time every time they hop in the water which is great to see because it means they are improving and achieving or getting closer to their goals each meet.”

Matthew topped the Neptune medal haul with a gold in division three boys.

The speedy Neptune also won the Eliminator for divisions one to three.

“The eliminator is a special event that is a race between the top times in freestyle for that meet,” Lorusso explained. “ They swim 50 freestyle against the other competitors until they get knocked out and there is one left standing.”

Kourtney Brager (winning silver in division three girls) placed third in this event,” Lorusso added.

Other medal winners included Jakob Brager silver in division one boys; Sage Cowan bronze in division four girls and Niallian Collier, silver in O-Cat two boys.

Lorusso won a bronze in division eight girls while assistant coach Melissa Afford took home silver in division seven girls.

The KSSA is off this Canada Day Weekend. Kootenay teams return to action July 9-10 in Colville, Wash.

Meets in Castlegar, July 16-17, and Kimberley, July 23-24, conclude the regular season.

Regionals are set for Castlegar August 6-7.

The top swimmers advance to the B.C. Summer Swim Association Championships August 15-21 in Richmond.
