Earth Hour Challenge results: Nelson Hydro
The Earth Hour challenge was made and communities throughout the region rose to the challenge.
Keremeos came out as the overall winner in the FortisBC Earth Hour Community Challenge. The community support means that the Keremeos Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192 will receive an energy savings upgrade to their facility valued at $5,000.
The City of Nelson and Nelson Hydro shut off non-essential electricity at the following locations:
• Baker Street decorative and heritage lighting
• Bonnington Falls Powerplant
• City Works Complex
• Lakeside Park
• Sewage Treatment Plant
• Various Hydro substations
• Waterfront Pathway
This resulted in an estimated 40 kWh load reduction at the above locations. The Nelson Hydro overall electrical load was greatly reduced from what was expected as normal load, due to higher than normal temperatures along with the reduction in energy consumption during Earth Hour.
