Five pillars of municipal vision have been enshrined into the city’s over-arching document after months of consultation and public meetings.

The sustainability principles developed in the Path to 2040 Sustainability Strategy are now ingrained in the Official Community Plan, after an open house and final adoption by City council recently.

City staff had been asked to expand on the wording for the five sustainability principles, and they were held up for scrutiny and input at a March 7 public meeting in City council chambers.

No one commented and the five principles were adopted later in the evening, including culture added in as the fifth pillar of sustainability.

The principles form part of the conscience that will guide City council as it makes future decisions.

“The amendment will incorporate the community’s vision for sustainability into the Official Community Plan which will inform future plans, policies and decision making,” read a City staff report.

“Cultural strength” — the fifth pillar — is about celebrating and embracing history and diversity in Nelson, the amendment stated. It is about using the city’s many arts, traditions, heritage and recreation assets to “enrich the quality of life for all citizens.”

The direction that cultural strength involves is included in the attachments below, as well as direction on the four other principles.

The other principles included healthy neighbourhoods, robust ecosystems, prosperity and resiliency.
