Library board fills two vacancies

The two rural spots on the Nelson Library board have now been filled.
With a successful vote in two of the three Regional District of Central Kootenay areas last October to establish library service, part of the deal was one rural member on the board for each area.
Towards that end, Greg Maslak (Area F) and Sharon Block (southern Area H) have been chosen.
The members were chosen from residents of the two areas in a call for applications that closed Dec. 2.
The official vote count on Monday, Oct. 18 showed 416 ‘yes’ votes to 413 ‘no’ votes in Area F, enough to enter into service for the Nelson Municipal Library.
The previous library referendum in Area F in 1991 when Dawson was director failed by 11 votes.
In the Slocan Valley (southern Area H), the vote passed by a count of 489 to 316, with Winlaw leading the vote at 194 yes to 86 no. Area E was firmly in the ‘no’ category with 597 (no) to 390 (yes).
The Nelson Library financial contribution is to be set at a rate of $10.30 per $100,000 of property assessment.
