For those Nelsonites heading east in the pit of winter, there is some help for your journey on one of the toughest roads in the province.

People heading east from Cranbrook can now see current weather and road conditions with the newest DriveBC webcam.

Located on Highway 3 at Ninth Avenue, the webcam is the 12th along the highway. Other Highway 3 webcams in the East Kootenay are at Morrissey Junction, Hosmer, Sparwood and Yahk.

Altogether, there are 167 webcams showing highway conditions throughout the province on DriveBC, which averages over 8,000 visitors a day.

The location of the new webcam, where the new ‘Cranbrook Arch’ spans an east entrance to downtown, was chosen after the ministry consulted with the community. The original ‘Cranbrook Arch’ was a signature highway landmark from 1935 until its demolition three decades later.

Real time road conditions are available at along with travel advisories, road reports, weather information, winter driving tips and other important links.

Travelers may also call the toll-free DriveBC line at 1 800 550-HWYS (4997).
