The future of the waste transfer station on the waterfront, organic waste composting and other topics were up for input Monday as the regional district hosts an open house in Nelson on the draft resource recovery plan — but there’s still time to comment.

People in the Nelson area were able to view the draft plan Monday and give input. The public comment period runs until Nov. 12. People can submit comments via e-mail at wastedept@rdck.bc.ca

The RDCK board of directors approved the draft plan for public consultation on Oct. 7. The amendment — which needs final approval by the Province — will guide solid waste management, resource recovery related activities and policy development in the regional district.

Specific projects outlined in the plan will occur over a five-year period from 2012 through 2016.

The resource recovery plan replaces the 1996 solid waste management plan and reflects the new focus on waste diversion and recovery of resources from what are traditionally considered to be waste streams.

The objectives of this plan include achieving financial sustainability for resource recovery services, alignment with zero waste goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Commitments outlined in the draft Plan include waste reduction initiatives and projects that will increase system efficiency, improve service and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The plan proposes to improve transport systems, new facilities for yard and garden waste composting, development of a comprehensive disposal bylaw, development of a unified region-wide recycling program, landfill closure and upgrades to transfer stations to improve efficiencies.
