Bylaw to punish criminal acts as they relate to fire

Criminal or negligent acts found to be the source of a fire in Nelson will now be the subject of fines, after Nelson City council authorized Nelson Fire Rescue to levy them as they saw fit.
The bylaw is intended to address concerns with additional costs when providing services to incidents caused by illegal operations.
People could also get a $200 fine if are found without a working smoke alarm in their home.
Since 2002, nine people have lost their lives in fire-related incidents in the city.
