Heimann, Walter Herbert

(July 12th, 2020)

May 11, 1938 – July 3, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce that Walter passed peacefully with his wife and his daughter by his side in Nelson, BC. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany where he and his sister were raised. After marrying Elisabeth in 1962, and with the subsequent arrival of his first two children, they sought out the Canadian dream and immigrated to Canada in 1967, where his youngest was born.

He continued to ply the trade he learned in Germany at the age of 17 as a machinist and elevator mechanic in Calgary and then in Nelson where he founded Kootenay Elevator Services. As luck would have it, Walter and Mary met by happenstance at Ainsworth Hot Springs and subsequently married in 1994.

Oh the adventures they had. Walter loved to hunt and camp. He enjoyed the complexities of how mechanical things functioned and worked on how to improve them.

Walter was predeceased by his parents, Charlotte and Freidrich and his step-son, James Drapaka. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Nelson, his sister and nephew, Hildegaard and Bernd Wittayer of Frankfurt, Germany, his children, Brigitte (Barry) Clayton of Vernon, BC, Ralf Heimann of Airdrie, Alberta, Iris (Peter) Steffl er of Nelson and his step-daughter, Suzie (Joe) Chernoff of Passmore, BC and a number grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their thanks for the kindness and care Walter received from the staff of Mountain Lakes Seniors Housing in his final years and from Doctor Lee MacKay and Dr. Trevor Janz.

Walter was cremated and there is no service by request. In lieu of fl owers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. As an expression of sympathy, you are invited to leave a personal message of condolence on the family’s online register at www.thompsonfs.ca.
