RCMP said in  a media release Saturday a 35-year-old Winlaw resident is happy to be drying off and warming up after spending a night outside.

Monty Taylor of the RCMP said in the release on Friday evening (February 9) Slocan Lake RCMP received a call of a missing snowmobiler after the male’s girlfriend said she could not get in contact with him.

“RCMP attended to the male’s residence and located a fresh set of snowmobile tracks departing from the residence,” RCMP said.

“Nelson Search and Rescue were activated, and the snowmobile tracks lead to an avalanche path but due to nightfall and the risk of avalanche the search was suspended until the following morning.”

RCMP said the search resumed Saturday morning and with the assistance of a helicopter, located the male walking in the area of the avalanche.

“The male who is expected to make a full recovery was rescued and treated for hypothermia,” RCMP said.

“The male advised the previous day he attempted to travel across the avalanche path with his snowmobile when he and the snowmobile rolled down into the gully.”

“It was too steep to walk up so he proceeded to walk in a direction which he later realized was the wrong direction so he hunkered down for the night, proceeding to walk again at daybreak,” the release added.
