Williams backstops Leafs to 5-0 victory over Spokane Braves

Nelson goalie Josh Willams continues to shine for the Leafs this season.

The Calgary native registered his second shutout of the season, stopping all 33 shots to backstop the Nelson Leafs to a convincing 5-0 victory over the Spokane Braves Friday night in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in the Lilac City.

Williams held the Braves off the scoresheet in the opening frame when the play was evenly matched.

In the second, Nelson began to take over, out shooting the Braves 31-11 and scoring twice to increase their lead to 4-0.

Brent Headon, with a pair, Jackson Zimmermann, David Sanchez and Ryan Keilty scored for the Leafs.

Nelson held period leads of 2-0 and 4-0.

The Leafs finished the game outshooting Spokane by a 60-33 margin.

The shutout lowered Wiliams goals against average to 1.00 and moves the Nelson backstop into third spot in netminder leaders after three games.

Nelson, 3-1-1 on the season, now travels to Creston Saturday to face the Thunder Cats.

Next home game at the NDCC Arena is Saturday, September 30 against Creston. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
