Whitewater trio off to tame gates at Whistler World Cup

Reece Walsh of the host Club tuned up for the World Cup at Whistler by capturing a gold medal at the recent Zone Finals at Whitewater Ski Hill.

Walsh, who also posted a fourth and fifth, won the top prize in the K1 boy’s division.

Walsh is going to be joined at in Whistler by Harper Henderson and Linnea Sharelove.

Henderson finished the weekend with a silver, bronze and a fourth in K1 boys while Sharelove won a pair of bronze medals to go with a sixth and eight-place finish.

“The kids really laid it all out and I am proud of the success and improvement each racer has achieved,” said Whitewater Coach Dylan Henderson. “For the first time in our team’s history, our athletes qualified for Whistler Cup which is the World Cup of ski racing for this age group.  

“Harper Henderson, Reece Walsh and Linnea Sharelove will compete against elite ski racers from 24 countries at this year’s event and it is a testament to the hard work and commitment that each of these athletes has put in this year.”

More than 100 skiers from Fernie, Invermere, Kimberley, Red Mountain, Salmo, Nakusp and Whitewater competed over the weekend in Giant Slalom and Slalom races.

Other Whitewater results had Hayley Mitchell gold, silver and bronze and Oso Punchard seventh, eighth and ninth in E2 girls.

In E2 boys Jesse Thurston finished fifth, sixth and seventh; Ian Corrie sixth and seventh; and Isaac Grey eighth.

In K1 boys Liam Osak registered two ninths and an eighth while Kalob Jensen placed tenth.

In K1 girls finished  and Savannah Leishman took tenth while Madison Smith posted a fourth and fifth in K2 girls.

In the J-series, Shannon Osak won a bronze and finished fourth.

These strong results bode well for the future as the outstanding growth of the Whitewater Ski Team continues.  

“Many of our high level E2 athletes will be making the jump to K racing next year,” Team President Paul Osak said.

“Athletes and coaches from around the province have taken note of Whitewater’s growth and success, and the fact that our athletes are now competing at Whistler Cup with the very best in the world speaks to the commitment of our athletes and coaches, and to the strength of our program.”

“We will field a highly competitive team for years to come.”
