The Wildcats opened the tournament by stopping Vernon Christian by identical 25-12 scores.

The Cats, without a single senior on the team, then dumped Mulgrave of West Vancouver 25-19, 25-21 to finish pool play with a 2-1 record.

Wildcats looking to close gap at Single-A Volleyball Championships

Fourth-ranked Mount Sentinel Wildcats open the B.C. High School A Girl’s Volleyball Championships Thursday in Duncan against Okanagan No. 4 Vernon Christian.

The Cats, winners of the bronze medal in 2012, play Mulgrave of West Vancouver and White Rock Christian in pool play Thursday.

“On the basis of the season play there seems to be a gap between the top three teams and next three or four,” Mount Sentinel head coach Joe Moreira said before departing for Vancouver Island.

“We are clearly intent on closing the gap.”

Friday, teams begin the playoff round before Saturday’s semi finals.

The top seed in the 16-team tournament is Kelowna Christian Knights.

City rival Immaculata is the second seed followed by Cedar Christian of Prince George.

The final is set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
