Summer of 2016 rang in Monday afternoon with residents in the northern hemisphere enjoying the longest day of the year — approximately 17 hours of daylight.

It might seem like good news, but for those of us in the northern hemisphere this is the time when the sun’s path stops moving northward in the sky and the days begin to slowly shorten.

This year it happened Monday, June 20, mid-day in the Pacific Time Zone.

The winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) falls between December 20 and 22. This year it’s on Wednesday, December 21.

Here’s a list of the dates and times of solstices & equinoxes this year.

  • Vernal Equinox (Spring) March 20 2016
  • Summer Solstice (Summer) June 20 2016
  • Autumnal Equinox (Fall) September 22 2016
  • Winter Solstice (Winter) December 21 2016

However, in typical June-like weather for the Kootenays, Environment Canada is calling for cooler temperatures for the next few days . . . and yes, that was thunder and lightning over Blewett Tuesday morning.

Always looking on the bright side of life, temperatures are predicted to warm up for the weekend.
