Villa Motel fire moves to mop-up stage

The fire at the Villa Motel has moved to the mop-up stage said Nelson Fire Rescue after confirming the blaze was extinguished as of 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Nelson Fire Rescue Chief Len MacCharles said fire suppression tactics continued throughout the day after initial reports came in early Wednesday morning.

The main fire was located in the pool building adjacent to the main building.

MacCharles said there is some water damage to the floor in Amanda’s Restaurant as a result of initial suppression efforts; however, fire crews have been able to minimize any further water damage.

Members and equipment of local Fire Departments including Northshore, Blewett, Crescent Valley, Beasley, Balfour/Harrop, plus staff from BC Ambulance, Nelson Hydro, and City of Nelson Public Works were on hand to assist in fire suppression operations.

UPDATE:

Nelson Fire Rescue said the structure fire at the Villa Motel north of the Big Orange Bridge was located in the pool building adjacent to the main building.

Smoke that could be seen for most of the morning has now subsided.

Nelson Fire Rescue reports no injuries at this time.

Nelson Fire Rescue deals with blaze at Villa Motel

Rush hour traffic from the North Shore to Nelson on Highway 3A was slowed Wednesday morning due to Nelson Fire Rescue battling a fire at the Villa Motel, north of the Big Orange Bridge.

Nelson Fire Rescue, with assistance from Regional District of Central Kootenay Fire Departments in Blewett, North Shore, Beasley and Balfour/Harrop, are trying to keep flames from spreading through to the main part of the motel.

Firefighters are shuttling traffic along the highway adjacent the motel.

Updates will be provide when they become available.
