Vernon, Midway come away with all the hardware at 17th Annual Icebreaker Tourney

The Vernon Vixens made the trek to the West Kootenay a successful venture, getting a handful of goals for Kelsey Kirkham to edge Spokane Stars 4-1 in the final of the 17th Annual Nelson Icebreaker Women’s Hockey Tournament Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

It was the second straight Nelson Icebreaker title for the Vixens. The tournament is hosted by the Nelson Blueliners Women’s Hockey Team.

Vanessa Vargas scored the lone goal for the Stars.

Host Blueliners managed to find a way into the medals, capturing the bronze ahead of Kootenay Cougars and Shuswap Storm.

The Blueliners lost during the round robin to Vernon 4-3. Nelson captain Loreli Dawson scored all three goals for the Blueliners to earn MVP honours for the game.

Kirkham had a goal and an assist to lead the Vixens attack.

In the Intermediate Division, Midway Black Betties finished on top of the standings to claim the title.

Creston Jets were second followed by the two Nelson squads, which includes Thorman Drillers.
