A business proposal for the former school board building in the North Shore neighbourhood is taking its idea public through a Zoom meeting Thursday, May 20th, night.

Valid Manufacturing, in partnership with the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting a public meeting (via Zoom) to better explain their proposal to the community Thursday, May 20, from 4-5 p.m.

People interested in the proposal can join the meeting at:

The Salmon Arm-based company set up in Nelson soon after Pacific Insight closed its doors, hiring eight former Pacific Insight employees.

The company manufactures a range of products, from vehicle instrument clusters to power systems, generator connections to power kiosks and “levelling” systems for buses and other vehicles.

After School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) vacated its premises on the North Shore, Valid purchased the Johnstone Road building with the intent to expand its Nelson operation to 40 people.

However, in order to do so the company has to gain approval for a zoning change to light manufacturing, requiring Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) board of directors approval under the Local Government Act.

Valid’s application has been through a referral process, but has not yet gone to the RDCK board of directors for consideration.

Currently, regional district staff are compiling responses from various agencies — such as Ministry of Transportation, the IHA — and the public to build a case for the proposal.

Although people are allowed to comment on the proposal throughout the process, there are other matters under consideration in the decision, including technical issues (servicing), policy direction from the Official Community Plan and overall impact to surrounding neighbourhood or region.

With the application filed and the process underway, the next step in the re-zone will be for regional district staff to bring a report to the board for consideration of amending bylaw, or not, likely slated for the RDCK regular June meeting.
